23 January 2025 - Report by Matt Hooper: Storm Éowyn is set to bring widespread disruption to Scotland on Friday, with the Met Office issuing a rare 'Red Warning' signifying a danger to life, with almost the entire country under at the very least a yellow warning for wind.
Fife Council announced on Thursday afternoon that Schools and nurseries would be closed on Friday, and several local businesses followed suit with Caulder's Garden Centre, Elmwood College, Wee Kingdom Softplay (both Cupar), Fife College (all campuses), St Andrews Links (all 7 courses), all Fife Council funeral services, and all Fife recycling centres announcing closures or cancellations for Friday. Scot Rail has announced that ALL TRAINS IN SCOTLAND WILL BE CANCELLED ON FRIDAY, and Stagecoach Bus has announced that ALL BUS SERVICES IN RED WARNING AREAS WILL BE SUSPENDED ON FRIDAY.
Winds are forecast to be between 80 and 90 mph consistently, with gusts of more than 100 mph. The UK Government and Scottish Government issued an emergency alert at 1750 on Friday evening. Storm Éowyn is set to begin for Fife at Midnight tonight, with a YELLOW WARNING in force from 0000-0600, this then worsens to an AMBER WARNING at 0600 through until 1000, and then becomes a RED WARNING from 1000-1700, the storm still brings an AMBER WARNING between 1700 and 2100 on Friday, and lessens to a YELLOW WARNING into Saturday until 1500.
