FIFA/UEFA suspend Russian clubs and national teams from all competitions
Monday, 28 February 2022, SHANK NEWS - AFTER INTERNATIONAL OUTCRY FROM ENGLAND, SCOTLAND, WALES, POLAND, SWEDEN AND CZECH REPUBLIC, AND FOLLOWING THE IOC DECISION TO SUSPEND RUSSIAN AND BELARUSIAN ATHLETES, FIFA, WORLD FOOTBALL'S GOVERNING BODY HAS ANNOUNCED THE FOLLOWING:

Following the initial decisions adopted by the FIFA Council and the UEFA Executive Committee, which envisaged the adoption of additional measures, FIFA and UEFA have today decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice. 
 
These decisions were adopted today by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters.
 
Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people. (SOURCE: FIFA.COM)


IT HAS NOT YET BEEN CONFIRMED WHAT THIS MEANS IMMEDIATELY FOR THE RESPECTIVE COMPETITIONS RUN BY FIFA AND UEFA, BUT IT IS EXPECTED POLAND WILL RECEIVE A BYE TO THE LAST ROUND OF THE PLAYOFFS AND PLAY EITHER SWEDEN OR CZECH REPUBLIC TO DETERMINE WHO GOES TO QATAR FOR THE 2022 FIFA WORLD CUP. SCOTLAND ARE SCHEDULED TO HOST UKRAINE NEXT MONTH IN THE FIRST ROUND, WITH A POTENTIAL ELIMINATOR AGAINST WALES IN CARDIFF.

RUSSIA BECOMES THE THIRD NATION TO BE SUSPENDED BY FIFA IN THE LAST 4 DAYS, FOLLOWING KENYA AND ZIMBABWE FOR GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE ON 25 FEBRUARY. 

THE SUSPENSION IS THE LATEST SANCTION THE WORLD OF SPORT HAS HIT RUSSIA WITH SINCE THEY INVADED UKRAINE ON 24 FEBRUARY, INCLUDING NUMEROUS SPONSORSHIP DEALS BEING CUT, THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL BEING MOVED TO PARIS AND FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX BEING CANCELLED.

UEFA HAVE ALSO ANNOUNCED THAT THEIR SPONSORSHIP DEAL WITH RUSSIAN COMPANY GAZPROM WILL BE ENDED IMMEDIATELY.
