8 AUGUST, 2022 - SHANK MEDIA, BY MATT HOOPER: RORY MCILROY WILL RETURN TO THE TOURNAMENT WHICH LAUNCHED HIS STUNNING PROFESSIONAL CAREER 15 YEARS AGO THIS SEPTEMBER, WHEN HE TEES IT UP ALONGSIDE HIS FATHER IN THE 21ST EDITION OF THE ALFRED DUNHILL LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP.
THE 2007 ALFRED DUNHILL LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP WAS JUST HIS THIRD START AS A PROFESSIONAL, AND RORY PRODUCED A STUNNING PERFORMANCE TO FINISH THIRD, BEHIND WINNER NICK DOUGHERTY AND RUNNER-UP JUSTIN ROSE TO SECURE HIS EUROPEAN TOUR CARD.
RORY ON RETURNING
Rory said: “I’m really looking forward to playing. It’s one of the most long-standing events on the DP World Tour and one I really enjoy, especially when I partner with my Dad.”
“I’ll be taking the Team Championship just as seriously as the professional event and it would be a special experience if we could win together.”
“The support I’ve had from the Scottish and visiting fans has always been fantastic and I have had some wonderful memories on these courses. St Andrews is a very special place for me. When I got my Tour card there back in 2007, it was a week that changed my life.”
RORY WILL LOOK TO BANISH THE MEMORIES OF ANOTHER NEAR MISS IN THE MAJORS EARLIER THIS SUMMER BY FINALLY CLAIMING THE ALFRED DUNHILL LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP THIS SEPTEMBER. MCILROY TOOK THE LEAD INTO THE FINAL ROUND OF THE 150TH OPEN ON THE OLD COURSE IN JULY, BUT DESPITE A FINAL ROUND OF 70 HE WAS OVERTAKEN BY EVENTUAL WINNER CAMERON SMITH AND FINISHED THIRD, MAKING IT 8 FULL YEARS WITHOUT A MAJOR TITLE.
RORY'S DUNHILL RECORD IS IMPRESSIVE, BUT HE HAS YET TO SECURE VICTORY DESPITE FINISHING AS RUNNER UP IN 2014, 2011 AND 2009.
FURTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS ON PROFESSIONALS AND AMATEURS COMPETING IN THE ALFRED DUNHILL LINKS CHAMPIONSHIP ARE EXPECTED SOON.
